EU Data Act: cloud switching fees end on 12 January 2027
From 12 January 2027, cloud providers serving customers in the EU may not charge any fee for switching to another provider, including data egress charges for the move. Until then, under Article 29 of the EU Data Act, they may charge at most their direct costs of switching.

Timeline
| Date | What applies |
|---|---|
| 12 Sep 2025 | The Data Act applies. Switching charges, including egress for the switch, may not exceed the provider's direct costs. |
| 12 Jan 2027 | Switching charges are no longer allowed at all. |
What is covered
- Fees for moving your data and applications to another provider or to your own infrastructure.
- Data egress charges caused by that switch.
- Cloud and edge services offered to customers in the EU, regardless of where the provider is headquartered.
What is not covered
- Egress for ongoing use, including running two clouds in parallel for a longer period. Providers may still charge for that at cost.
- Your contract's notice periods and minimum terms, which the Data Act limits but does not remove.
What this means for planning a move
The data-transfer bill used to be one of the biggest reasons to stay. A move planned now can run its bulk data copy after 12 January 2027 without switching fees. AWS, Google Cloud and Azure already waive egress for customers who leave, under their own conditions, since early 2024.
MoveInfra builds the plan and the parallel copy first, then syncs the data. Start with a free bill analysis.
